The Zaurus User Group has a forum specifically for the X11 ROM.

I discovered the Cacko X11 ROM for the Sharp Zaurus C760 today. This is a replacement ROM (it reflashes your Zaurus) that uses X11 rather than the standard Qt Embedded that ships with the Zaurus. It has a few other tweaks and features as well. This includes adding some of the Zaurus C860 functionality.

Some of the changes include:

  • USB Storage support. This means you can connect your zaurus to a PC using USB and access it as a mass storage device. This works under Windows and Linux.
  • X11 user interface allowing many standard Linux applications to port across with no changes
  • .
  • Applications compiled with Xscale optimisation and using a newer GCC compiler

I installed it to try it out and it is pretty impressive. The install went without a hitch and the interface is clean and easy to use. I installed a number of packages from the feed at Cacko including SSH and native gcc development tools. Using SSH I was able to connect to my local machine and run X applications remotely on the Zaurus. Very neat. The main disadvantage is there are no PIM applications supplied out of the box. Cacko are working on some but any Linux PIM applications should work fine. Now to find a nice Lisp system to run...
