GARRINGREEN HOTSPOT -- ICT Ireland, the Irish information technology industry body, strongly opposes the Irish government's proposed data retention bill, which would see telecommunications companies forced to hold three years' worth of Irish people's and business's email, landline, mobile, fax and web surfing traffic data.
I received a form letter back from the Minister of Justice when I inquired about this Bill, in which he told me that data were being held anyway and all his initiative does is give it statutory standing.
I object to the Irish government keeping three years of my phone records. And if ICT Ireland represents a business sentiment, many others object as well. Electronic data retention degrades competitiveness in an international environment.
