GARRINGREEN HOTSPOT -- Whatever happens in the year ahead in Ireland, it is clear that there will not at any stage be a return to the kind of boom conditions I saw between 1994 and 2001. That was a unique period in Irish economic history. Those conditions remain unparalleled in the economic history of any other industrialised country.

If Ireland can master current inflation by avoiding excessive pay increases in the year ahead, Irish growth rates will still be around 5 per cent a year. That would be about twice the rate in other EU countries.
