DUBLIN -- Sitting in gridlock 450m from the Pearse Street Garda station in Dublin yesterday around 1315, I watched two masked men exit a post office and briskly jog down the pavement. I was sitting in a car less than 6m from the front door of the glass-plated green door, talking on my phone. If I was using my cameraphone, I could've snapped and sent a robbery in progress. I had an unobscured shot into the premises where I saw a scuffle at the counter. No one walked between my window and the door of the post office. I could've got decent pix of the guy with the gun and his mate with the crowbar.
So, does the Garda Siochana have an MMS number? Because there's a good chance my cameraphone would've been nicked by the perps the moment they saw me clicking away. That would leave the evidence in the ether or in someone's mailbox.
I like street theatre and have a plastic bullet in one of my camera bags already plus a chin scar from a late-night taxi rank fracas. And although I don't fancy taking a bullet for Nokia, my instinct would be to click away and contribute to a mugshot gallery. It should be simple enough to send image evidence to mms@garda.ie and I wish that was a public service available now. |
