GARRINGREEN HOTSPOT -- When I first got to Ireland, I was amazed at how polite people were on the street. Anybody who brushed up against me quickly apologised. How things have changed in six years. While walking down Grafton Street during Christmas, I watch a young college student stand still in shock as someone grabbed her mobile phone from her hand and then ran down a side street. Along Henry Street before 0800 another morning, I stood behind three teenagers who purchased €72 worth of wine. One of the girls had a baby in a buggy. Last summer, on a Dart to Bray, I watched a teenaged boy lurch across a seat and grab the breasts of a girl traveling by herself. He was "sorry, just messin!" All of these things prove that life in Ireland has gotten a little seedier than the relatively charming days of the late 90s.
