U.S. Warming Up to Warming. Last September's terrorist attacks diverted much of the world's focus from global warming, but there are indications the U.S. is interested in moving forward. Berlin correspondent Steve Kettmann interviews Pew Center international environmental official Elliot Diringer. [Wired News]
Is it all too little, too late? The US's stance when it abrogated the Kyoto agreement sent out signals which suggested that the new administration was intent on adopting Reaganist isolationism all over again.

Norwegian leader criticizes isolation of Yasser Arafat. Norway's prime minister on Wednesday criticized Israel's isolation of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as pointless. [AP World News]
Isn't it a shame that neither the EU nor (to my knowledge) any member-state has come out with similar sentiments long ago? Israel's treatment of Arafat is inexcusable, to my mind.

Catholics Plan 'Bloody Sunday' March. Thirty years ago, the British army killed 13 Catholic protesters in Derry, a massacre that radicalized Catholics and set the stage for Northern Ireland's bloodiest year. [AP World News]
It's difficult to credit that these events took place as long as thirty years ago. And even now the relatives of the victims still wait for some sort of justice, with submissions over legal niceties constantly delaying progress in the public enquiry.

Storms in Europe Kill at Least 17. Powerful gales battered northern Europe, killing at least 17 people as the wind ripped roofs off houses, disrupted traffic and shipping and left thousands of homes without power Tuesday. [AP World News]
Here in Ireland we also caught some of the force of the weather. It was obviously worst on the West coast, exposed to the Atlantic, but even here in Dublin conditions were quite severe. It was quite a battle making my way across the river Liffey on my way to perform my jury duty.

Israel Mulls West Jerusalem Security. Israeli officials presented a plan Tuesday to tighten security in Jerusalem, possibly including erecting barriers and checkpoints to keep Palestinians out of the Jewish side of the city, scene of two deadly attacks in the past week. [AP World News]
I know someone else's weblog features a constant update of the toll of Middle East violence, but I can't resist commenting on this news item. It saddens me to see how the situation has spiraled constantly deeper and deeper into hostility reminiscent of the worst days before the peace accords of the late '90s. I lay the blame firmly at the feet of Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister. After all, it was his cynical visit to Israeli settlements which re-kindled extremist opinion in Israel, led to his appointment, and gave him the power to systematically dismantle the already fragile peace.
