Dan Gillmor: "Does the technology industry need Hollywood's permission to innovate?"  [Scripting News]

I never thought I'd be applauding anything coming from Intel, but on this occasion I must say it's good to hear some common sense being aired on this issue. Quite apart from the sheer arrogance of the music industry and the Hollywood studios, this whole trend towards the mantra of copy-protection/prevention is a phenomenon which has taken off at a quite amazing pace and is worrying in the extreme.
And, as I've said before, there's the other troubling aspect of how US law will affect consumer rights in Europe and Asia. Hopefully it won't turn into a case of 'America sneezes, we catch a cold'.

The Lord of the Rings  All the recent hype about the film version of the first part prompted me to return to the original for another read (my seventh?). I first discovered this wonderful book back in the mid 70s. I don't recall how I found out about it, but I do remember being swept away by it, right from the opening lines. Read more here.
