U.S. vs. U.N. Court: Two Worldviews. The emergence of the U.S. as the sole superpower has only deepened its resistance to international organizations. By Serge Schmemann. [New York Times: International]
This is an interesting article insofar as it attempts to see the situation from both points of view. However, I must question the writer when he describes the United States as "the sole military, economic and cultural superpower". Nobody would dispute the military aspect of this description, and perhaps one must grudgingly also accept the economic one -- but there is absolutely no way that I can agree with the US being granted the accolade of 'cultural superpower'! Culture? What culture? Cheap pop music, Macdonalds, Disney, a universal dollar-first mentality? If that constitutes culture then the Pope's not a Catholic!
