U.N. Extends Bosnia Mission to July 15. The U.N. Security Council extended the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Bosnia until July 15 on Wednesday, averting a threatened shutdown by the United States over its demand for immunity for American peacekeepers. [AP World News]
This is becoming ridiculous! These temporary extensions of the UN mandate, aimed solely at coming up with with some formula of words to placate the Americans, could so easily develop into a farcial situation. What's to stop further and further extensions being agreed to, until such time as the EU can gracefully take over, UN involvement can end, and everyone saves face?
Of course, behind all this maneouvering is the sad fact that political face-saving and posturing and one-upmanship take priority over the really important things: the day-to-day lives of innocent citizens of Bosnia (today, then Lebanon, then Cyprus then . . .). The only consolation is that the US have not been allowed get away with their bully-boy tactics.
