Powell Signals Compromise on Iraq. WASHINGTON (AP) -- Signaling compromise, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday ``there may be a way'' to bridge remaining differences with France and Russia on a U.N. resolution designed to force Iraq to disarm. By The Associated Press. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]
And still the sensible permanent members of the Security Council hold out against the US's deliberately difficult demands on Iraq. A significant quote from the report: 'A White House official said the Bush administration was using its threat to act alone against Iraq as a strategy to compel Russia and France to back the joint US-British resolution. While they do not like the resolution, the administration is hoping they will support it rather than be left behind, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.'
This has been obvious from the first, of course, with Dubyoo actually saying that the UN is somehow duty-bound to follow the lead of the US Congress and grant legitimacy to an invasion of Iraq. The notion that the US is above international law is nothing new, of course (its efforts to obtain immunity for US citizens from the International War Crimes Court.
