France Warns U.S. It Will Not Back Early War on Iraq. China and Germany also expressed stark differences with Washington over the pace and effectiveness of the inspections. By Julia Preston. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]
Excellent! It is good to hear some common sense coming out of Europe. The whole sad, sorry episode of the Security Council vote needs to be put behind us at this stage and the rotten possibility that the US will interpret the Inspectors' report in there own sick way must be avoided.
But I'd feel a lot happier if the government here in Ireland would now come to its senses. Us military planes are busily stopping over at Shannon for refueling on their way to the Gulf, and I am not at all happy with this. A protest over the weekend saw only 1500 or so people turn up in Shannon to protest against this blatant violation of our much-vaunted neutrality. But hopefully even this small turnout may work its way into the Government's consciousness, whose representatives so far have done nothing more than point to the 'special relationship' between Ireland and the US and suggest that we are duty bound to support whatever the US President wants.
It's time for people and governments alike to think for themselves and see past the spin which is being spun by the US and by the international media. The simple fact is: America is not always right!

US gone mad. Sunday Times: "Bush has an arm-lock on God. And God has very particular political opinions. God appointed America to save the world in any way that suits America. God appointed Israel to be the nexus of America's Middle Eastern policy, and anyone who wants to mess with that idea is a) anti-Semitic, b) anti-American, c) with the enemy, and d) a terrorist." [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]
What a great article! I hope that saying that the fact it's by John le Carré gives it added credibility isn't suggesting that the opinions contained in it would be any less valid if coming from someone else. No matter who had writtent his, there can surely be no doubt at all that this is truly what this whole sorry mess is all about.
