ipaq 3800 Linux

One time I installed the notepaq editor package. I kind of liked it -- for notes. But I rebooted, and it looked like my notes disappeared. That's no good. (I seem to have to reboot a lot.) So I'll look at notepaq again after I've sorted out all the file system stuff.

On top of all of that, when I plugged in the ethernet card... nothing. I floundered wildly. Stop the network. Restart the pcmcia. Reboot. At one-point the ipaq purple-screened when I inserted the cf ethernet card.
Since I don't know how to see console messages on the ipaq, I turned on the windows pc with the serial connection to the cradle. Instead of just rebooting, I rebooted to the boot loader (hold the center button of the cursor control down while poking the reboot hole). I typed "boot" in the PC terminal window to get the ipaq going. This time, the ethernet connection worked just fine. Ouch.

ipaq war story of the morning: Having heard that the screen calibration only works in landscape, I gave it a try. Of course first I tried landscape left, but apparently it only works in landscape right. The good news is that in landscape right, holding a button down really helps.
Suggestion: the calibration screen should only start when it's in the correct orientation; otherwise display a message to switch to landscape right.
Otherwise, you could display a message on the calibration screen, and tell people how to escape the screen without screwing things up.
The other pain I had so far today was trying to get a cgi to work with thttpd and perl and dillo. Why is it always the *last* thing you try that works? (I'm *joking*, you know.) Somewhere along the way I got the thttpd settings right, and the script right, but Dillo wouldn't send a get with the right url, no matter how many times I clicked, hit reload, or entered it in the open url window. Eventually it occurred to me to exit from Dillo and try again, and that worked.
Idea: the 3800 doesn't charge when it's "off". It charges slowly when it's "on". So maybe it charges faster if I turn the lcd off?
