"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time." -- JFK

[11:08:56 PM]
The good news of the day is that I found a m/f 9-pin serial cable in a pile, so I can put the cradle on my desk and still reach the pc on the floor. With a little futzing, I got minicom installed and configured enough to bype "boot", and now I won't mind so much if I have to boot to the bootloader before the ethernet card will work. (Before, I had to move the cradle to a different computer, and put it under the table -- I was sitting on the floor to use the ipaq. Very, very silly.

[6:41:02 PM]
Nasty. Sometimes after I reboot, the ethernet connection won't start. Symptom is no lights on the ethernet adaptor. The fix is to boot to the bootloader screen, connect over a serial line, and type boot. This has happened at least twice.

Booting to the bootloader screen and pressing the swirl button doesn't help.

Today when I rebooted with the cf sleeve on, I would actually get the ethernet adaptors lights to come on when I inserted it. Alas, the screen would turn red, and I would be unable to ssh in. (I didn't try the serial connection.) When I rebooted with the sleeve off, no ethernet connection (but the system didn't crash).

The message is: "Fear the reboot, J. R." Well, I hate rebooting, anyway.

A few times, x-windows has crashed. I wasn't sure how to deal with that. I'm still not. I tried "x stop" and "x start" (from ssh), but there were scary messages, and when it started again, there were two menus. (That's why I gave up and tried to reboot.)
