Typography

Doyald Young (at www.delphipress.com) sent me a copy of his older book, Logo Types & Letter Forms. (Thanks!) It's a wonderful book, though it raises the issue of drawing letters. I use computers so I don't have to do such things by hand, yet there's no denying I'd learn a lot, and have some fun, too.
Anyway, the arrival of the book provoked a search for excellent typography books.
For Christmas, I asked for and received (thanks!) Emil Ruder's Typographie, which was just republished. Great book.
I'm itching to go buy Josef Mueller-Brockman's book: Grid Systems -- Raster Systeme. The web limits the effectiveness of grids, but the book is just over-the-top with detailed examples. In other words, it's my kind of book.
After reading one of Tschichold's books in German, I'm also tempted by Hans Rudolf Bosshard's book: Der typographische Raster (2000).
James Felici's new book "Complete Manual of Typography" sounds interesting, but it seems like I looked at it and decided I didn't want it. I'll look at it again.
[Update: I finally tracked down Felici's book. I think it's good. But with Ruder, Bringhurst, and several Tschichold books already on my shelf, I think I've got a pretty good start on theory and practice. Felici goes into some detail on using computer software. That might help a lot of people, but I think I understand the software pretty well. In short, if I were going to buy a first good typography book, I might be well tempted to get Felici's.]
I also bought "Better Type" by Betty Binns... for five bucks. It's *way* over the top in examples. Examples of varying the parameters of blocks of type. I've had way more than five bucks-worth of fun with it.

Zippy:
"Letter forms say things."
"Letter forms make us do things."
"Letter forms are not of this planet."
