My favorite bit from Emil Ruder's Typographie so far is that it's all done with illusions: A horizontal line *looks* longer than a vertical line of the same actual length. A perfect square *looks* as if it's wider than it is tall. A horizontal line looks "thicker" than if it were vertical. Etc.
