China to develop Windows clone
China is set to develop a windows workalike equivalent to Win 98, with full compatibility with Office 200 and Word. Apparently, 18 companies and universities have been working on the 2 initiatives, with a 1.0 version supposedly already released to certain government offices.
Isn't it ironic given the recent announcement of MS investment in China?
I doubt a Windows 98 clone could be developed from scratch in 1 year, or 2 or even 3 years. I suspect this project will be based on an existing Linux project instead: WINE - a windows compatibility layer for Linux (very similar to the "Classic Environment" on Mac OSX.)
