Late Night Software releases XML Tools 2.4

XML Tools is a Scripting Addition that allows AppleScript to parse and generate XML data. XML Tools 2.4 runs natively on MacOS 8.6-9.2 and MacOS X 10.x. [Direct Download]

Changes in this version (version history not updated) are:

-- Added a new allowing leading whitespace parameter to the parse XML command. This parameter, which is false by default, causes XML Tools to ignore any leading white space in an XML data stream.

-- NOTE: XML Tools 2.3.2 introduced a change where leading white space was always ignored. This raised the ire of XML purists and so we've made this an optional behavior for XML Tools 2.4.

-- The XML leading comments property of the XML Document class has been renamed XML Prolog and now includes both comments and processing instructions appearing before the root tag in an XML document.

-- The generate XML command now properly encodes entities for markup characters appearing in tag attribute values.

-- Processing instructions containing colons are now parsed correctly.

-- The generate XML command can now handle the case where processing instructions appear in the XML prolog (i.e. before the root tag).

It demonstrates the following languages: Objective-C, C, C++ and Java (through the Java Bridge as well as directly). It's a very simple application from a UI standpoint. It provides a series of buttons that is labeled with each language and when clicked it uses 'call method' to call an Objective-C method defined in Multi-Language. h. These in turn then either call a function (C) or call a method of an instantiated object of the language type."

A new source of scripts

Jesse Shanks, in a post to the BBEdit-Talk list, announced 2 new scripts which are available from his web site. One script uses BBEdit and the other uses Apple's QuickTime Player. He states...

"I have a couple of scripts that I made that generates the Active X Object tag around the Embed tag and also allows for the additions of some other parameters. Auto HREF - A link that the browser will go to when the movie is clicked. Javascript can be enabled in the movie. The movie can loop. Targetting can be set to the Quicktime Player. Kiosk Mode can be set. The movie can be hidden."

Other scripts and AppleScript Studio projects are available.

AppleScript Studio Support Project updated by Tim Bumgarner

Tim Bumgarner, of AppleScript Studio Engineering fame, has posted two new sets of .h/.m files to his web site. The first is "Event Support" which provides some accessors to some of the modifier keys for the 'event' class that aren't working in 1.0 of Studio. The second is the "Localized String" support. This provides support (again through the 'call method' command) that let's you load a string from a localized .strings file.

Restart your Dock with AppleScript

"Have you ever had your Dock lock up on you under OS X? If you just closed an application and it still shows that it is running in the Dock, then the way to clear up the problem is to quit the Dock. When you quit the Dock, OS X realizes that the Dock isn't running and it restarts it for you, putting you right back in business.

Here is the easiest way to make sure restarting your Dock is as easy as one click, with the help of a simple AppleScript."

Adobe takes wraps off Photoshop 7.0

Support for OS X, and extensive scripting capabilities, will make this a must-have upgrade for pros.

In his article, Rob Galbraith says "Scripting support on the Mac side isn't new. It's been available through a powerful but pricey Photoshop plug-in called Photoscripter since Photoshop 5.0. But the fact that it's now rolled into Photoshop on both Mac and Windows platforms should make scripting more pervasive for those enticed by its workflow-smoothing possibilities."

I've added several new and updated scripts to the ScriptBuilders archive this week. They're too numerous to mention but we have some great scripts coming in. Thanks to everyone who supports ScriptBuilders!

I'll use this section to post AppleScript related information and links to some of my scripts. "Your best source for all things AppleScript" is MacScripter.net. Of course, I'm partial since I'm one of the principles there. Check out the ScriptBuilders section for hundreds of great scripts!
