QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"Being a conservative in America traditionally has meant that one holds a deep, abiding respect for the Constitution. We conservatives believe sincerely in the integrity of the Constitution. We treasure the freedoms that document protects."
- - Senator Barry Goldwater (R/Arizona)
The USA
Patriot Act allows non-citizens to be detained without
charge and held indefinitely once charged. This is permissible if the US government
certifies that there are "reasonable grounds" to believe a person's
actions threaten national security.
U.S. CONSTITUTION

14th

THE HISTORY:

Sedition Act, penalizing anyone judged to be hindering the war effort by making false statements, obstructing enlistment, or speaking against production of war materials, the American government, its constitution, or the flag. Signed into law by President
Woodrow Wilson on May 21.

One night this winter I accidentally caught Strip Search on HBO & it blew
me away. Hardly anyone else I know saw it because it was promptly pulled
off the air & apparently stashed in a vault somewhere in the AOL Time Warner
megasphere. It skillfully weaves together 2 separate interrogations; one
of a Muslim immigrant in the US & the other, an American student in China.
It‚s an artfully crafted warning about the erosion of civil liberties under
the U.S. Patriot Act. I urge you to check out all the films the 2005 Amnesty
Film Fest staff has assembled & watch out for the fest when it comes your
way.

Sydney
Lumet has been making films since before the Rhino was born. His 50 plus years body of work has been examining the topics of truth & corruption from many angles. His list of films is way too long to list, but here are just a few:
- 12
Angry Men (1957) A dissenting juror in a murder trial
slowly manages to convince the others that the case is not as obviously clear
as it seemed in court.
- The Pawnbroker (1964) One of the first film's to deal with
the PTSD & inter-generational trauma of the survivors of the Nazi concentration
camps.
- Network (1976) A TV network cynically exploits a deranged
ex-TV anchor's ravings and revelations about the media for their own profit.
- The Verdict (1982)A lawyer sees the chance to salvage his career and self-respect
by taking a medical malpractice case to trial rather than settling.
- Running
on Empty (1988) In 1971, Arthur and Annie Pope blew
up a napalm lab to protest the war... Ever since then they have been on the run
from the FBI. They chose their lives. Now their son must choose his. - Night
Falls on Manhattan (1997) A newly elected Distrct attorney finds himself in the
middle of a police corruption investigation that may involve his father and his
partner.

Writer & Producer Tom
Fontana and Executive Producer Barry
Levinson are responsible for another amazing body of work not the least of which is the amazingly raw social commentary of the HBO prison series, "OZ."
