FEATURED ARTICLES
- Amnesty International Film Festival opens with "Strip Search"
- Artists For Amnesty honors Sydney Lumet, Barry Levinson & Tom Fontana
- Join Amnesty International's fight to defend human rights and protect lives

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"Being a conservative in America traditionally has meant that one holds a deep, abiding respect for the Constitution. We conservatives believe sincerely in the integrity of the Constitution. We treasure the freedoms that document protects."
- - Senator Barry Goldwater (R/Arizona)

The USA Patriot Act allows non-citizens to be detained without charge and held indefinitely once charged. This is permissible if the US government certifies that there are "reasonable grounds" to believe a person's actions threaten national security.

U.S. CONSTITUTION
5th Amendment: No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.
6th Amendment: Right to a speedy public trial by an impartial jury; right to be informed of the facts of the accusation; right to confront witnesses and have assistance of counsel.
14th Amendment: All persons (citizens and non-citizens) within the U.S. are entitled to due process and equal protection of the laws.

THE HISTORY: May 16th
1918 -- US Congress passes The Sedition Act, penalizing anyone judged to be hindering the war effort by making false statements, obstructing enlistment, or speaking against production of war materials, the American government, its constitution, or the flag. Signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson on May 21.

RHINO HERE:
Rhino highly recommends the Amnesty International Film Festival which tours round the country; next stop: Los Angeles, May 24th - 29th. Opening Night will feature the presentation of "The Artists For Amnesty Award" to Director Sydney Lumet; Writer, Tom Fontana & Executive Producer, Barry Levinson for their work on a little known drama called, "Strip Search." If you'll be in L.A. the 24th & would like to attend, you can RSVP to (310) 815 0450 & tell em Rhino sent you.

One night this winter I accidentally caught Strip Search on HBO & it blew me away. Hardly anyone else I know saw it because it was promptly pulled off the air & apparently stashed in a vault somewhere in the AOL Time Warner megasphere. It skillfully weaves together 2 separate interrogations; one of a Muslim immigrant in the US & the other, an American student in China. It‚s an artfully crafted warning about the erosion of civil liberties under the U.S. Patriot Act. I urge you to check out all the films the 2005 Amnesty Film Fest staff has assembled & watch out for the fest when it comes your way.

Sydney Lumet has been making films since before the Rhino was born. His 50 plus years body of work has been examining the topics of truth & corruption from many angles. His list of films is way too long to list, but here are just a few:

- 12 Angry Men (1957)  A dissenting juror in a murder trial slowly manages to convince the others that the case is not as obviously clear as it seemed in court.
- The Pawnbroker (1964)  One of the first film's to deal with the PTSD & inter-generational trauma of the survivors of the Nazi concentration camps.
- Network (1976)  A TV network cynically exploits a deranged ex-TV anchor's ravings and revelations about the media for their own profit. - The Verdict (1982)A lawyer sees the chance to salvage his career and self-respect by taking a medical malpractice case to trial rather than settling.
- Running on Empty (1988)  In 1971, Arthur and Annie Pope blew up a napalm lab to protest the war... Ever since then they have been on the run from the FBI. They chose their lives. Now their son must choose his. - Night Falls on Manhattan (1997) A newly elected Distrct attorney finds himself in the middle of a police corruption investigation that may involve his father and his partner.

Writer & Producer Tom Fontana and Executive Producer Barry Levinson are responsible for another amazing body of work not the least of which is the amazingly raw social commentary of the HBO prison series, "OZ."
