THE QUOTE:
"Military justice is to justice what military music is to music."
- - Groucho Marx
THE HISTORY:
October 31st - All
Hallows' Eve / Halloween -- Pagan
festival of fall during which the dead can be communicated with & set to
rest. Appropriated, but not totally demolished, by the churches. Also referred
to as Mischief Night, the original reason for disguise was to prevent lonely
spirits recognizing you & snatching you away to their between-the-worlds
lair. In the 10th century, Druids held human sacrifices & prayers. Much later,
human sacrifice became cakes left out for the dead, thrown into the fire in the
morning. In Brittany all wore black, etc.
October 31st, 1938 -- On Halloween night Orson
Welles & the
Mercury Theater provoked a national panic with their dramatization of
the H.G. Wells novel, "War of the Worlds." Widespread fears that Martian
soldiers are landing in New Jersey ensues. Drivers trying to escape the commie
invaders clog highways, & one Pittsburgh woman, shrieking "I'd rather
die this way," was saved only at the last moment from poisoning herself.
Orson Welles' radio broadcast demonstrates the suggestive power of mass communications.
October 31st, 1987 -- Joseph
Campbell, 83, passes to
the spirit world, mythologically speaking.

THE BOOK (& AUDIO BOOK):
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
How the U.S. Uses Globalization to Cheat Poor Countries Out of Trillions
By John Perkins
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/11/09/1526251
Covertly recruited by the United States National Security Agency and
on the payroll of an international consulting firm, he traveled the world˜to
Indonesia, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and other strategically
important countries. His job was to implement policies that promoted the interests
of the U.S. corporatocracy (a coalition of government, banks, and corporations)
while professing to alleviate poverty˜policies that alienated many nations
and ultimately led to September 11 and growing anti-Americanism. Within a few
weeks of its release , Confessions of an Economic Hit Man landed on The NY Times
Bestseller List.

WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price
Award-winning filmmaker Robert Greenwald's new documentary on Wal-Mart
is now out and available. The Nation sez it's "powerful, emotional
and entertaining way to help trigger change in the way America's largest company
conducts business in the US and across the globe. It has the potential
to raise much more awareness about what's wrong with Wal-Mart and why--which
is the reason that The Nation is part of a national network supporting and promoting
the release of the documentary. (It's also a really good movie!)" http://www.walmartmovie.com

Good Night, and Good Luck
Though it is a meticulously detailed reconstruction of an era, "Good
Night, and Good Luck," directed by George Clooney from a script he wrote
with Grant Heslov, is concerned with more than nostalgia. Burnishing the legend
of Edward R. Murrow, the CBS newsman who in the 1940's and 50's established a
standard of journalistic integrity his profession has scrambled to live up to
ever since, the film is a passionate, thoughtful essay on power, truth-telling
and responsibility.
