Interactive TV "spam" a taste of the future. Unrequested TV is downloaded to smart home recorders in both the US and UK, as the technologies' capabilities are implemented [New Scientist]

I am undecided id this is a good thing or a huge annoyance. While it targets viewers with shows based on their tastes, and takes up otherwised reserved space on the HD, how is it different form junk mail/spam if I didn't ask for it and it suddenly appears?
