Looking Forward : Technology that we may or may not see in the future. Some of it is my ideas and thoughts, some is that people are developing now, and all of it is filtered through my perspective as to what could be done.

CAD goes mouseless [IDG InfoWorld]

Back in 1995 I was working on AutocCAD full time for the interior design department of an office furniture company. One of the things that I would have loved was to have a pen based input system. Now seven years later AutoDesk is finally starting to come up with a system that will tie in with monitors that allow for pen based input.

My dream was to come up with a display that could be mounted much like the traditional drafting table. That would allow users to have an E sized sheet (36x48) that is actually the display. A replaceable sheet of lexan or glass on top of the LCD*, so that the users can still use the display as a desk when not actively drawing.

By having this full sized table display, the draftsman** can see much more of what he is working on. This serves to minimize the need to scroll and zoom while working on a drwaing. Lastly, the user could then see what the finished drawing will look like prior to printing.

* I say LCD as this is the closest available technology that could be used for this. OLEP, digital paper, and other technologies that are being developed could be used for this as well. The future is hard to predict.

**I use the term man to mean the race of humans. Can you reproduce with a human? Then you are a part of what I refer to when I use the term man.
