Record Labels' Answer to Napster Still Has Artists Feeling Bypassed. Record companies have said that it's the artists who lose with services like Napster. Under the labels' new Internet services, however, the performers still don't get a dime. [The New York Times: Technology]

Off the record, the label execs say they'll start paying the artists later, after they have found out if they can make nay money by offering the services in this manner.

Commentary: Make sure you always own the content you produce, so that you can continually make money on that IP. Example: A song that is written to be a hit single that then goes on to be used in a car commercial, appears in five movies and sixteen tv shows, plus on the soundtrack of a game. You get a royalty for each of those uses, plus the fact that five, ten years down the road you let someone release a cover of the track, and you get paid for that as well.

Own your memes, make sure that you get paid for them.
