Jonathan Shapiro: "Today (as I write, in fact), we are preparing to start the first serious commercial effort around the EROS system." If you're curious about capabilities, be sure to see Marc Stiegler's talk on Tuesday. [Hack the Planet]

A year or two ago, I interviewed with Okena, a company that provides a security solution which binds into the OS and watches what services/files/etc running programs access. It seems like a lot of companies could use a solution like theirs, which applies a heuristic to program behavior, and can shut down misbehaved programs (i.e. when they access your address book.)

It seems like a lot better idea than retroactively looking for a virus' binary signature.

Bag of new tools for editing XML in simple text form.

XML has become more popular as authoring format, and it brings with it the frustrating choice between typing tags ad nauseum, or adopting XML GUIs that may be too expensive, too buggy or too proprietary for preference.

My sentiments exactly.

There a thread on the OpenACS bboard about using XML for data migrations. I've done tons of data migrations, and feel strongly that most of the time XML is overkill. For the case described on the bboard, where it has the potential to really streamline data migrations for people unfamiliar with the OpenACS data model, I think it makes sense.

There was a open source project I came across that looked like a promising way to approach XML/EAI. It began in Java and had been ported to Perl. I'm trying to dig it up right now... here are some other links that are close but not quite what I remember:

  • XDisect(Python) looks interesting. It reads like the Scriptics platform, updated for Python and XML. Not open source :-(

  • Open3 OSS Java Enterprise Application Integration #1. This has always looked interesting, but I don't know much about it. Aside:plans to add a Perl connector - nice.

  • OpenAdapter Java EAI #2.

    Ah - I found it!
