Spikesource The Spikesource certified open source stack sounds quite intriguing. Their architecture diagram mentions that they will be providing an SOA layer which includes supporting db schema for MySQL and Postgresql. I would like to see more open source projects supporting a common db schema or at least some schema best practices, but I know why it's so incredibly difficult to make this happen in practice (taking away design decisions makes for-fun coding less fun). That's the most appealling aspect of OpenACS to me, and it's a shame the idea couldn't be applied to projects that don't share a common framework or even development language. Maybe the momentum of commercial vendor support can push this idea somewhat? Of course, in Spikesource the common schemas are there to support SOA, which is at the complete opposite end of the application interoperability spectrum (i.e. loose coupling vs. common schema). It will be very interesting to see what they come up with for services and whether it makes bypassing the 2 tier model favored by scripters worthwhile. 9:34:47 AM      comment []  trackback []
