Software-related risks

You may want to make reading the ACM's moderated RISKS digest a part of your regular routine, so that you'll hear about computer-induced problems and many other technology-related risks — usually very shortly after they happen. The digest is published in the Usenet newsgroup comp.risks, distributed through a mailing list, and available on the Web. New issues are published as warranted by current events, averaging once per week. It's very informative. [this item]

Who pays the US federal income taxes

AP recently ran a story on US income taxes. Highlights and related notes:
  • The top 1% of wage earners pay over one-third of the total federal income taxes, while earning 19 percent of the nation's income. To qualify for the 1%, one must make a minimum of $293k.
  • The top 5% of income earners pay more than 55% of the total federal income taxes. To be eligible for the top 5%, one need merely earn $120k or more.
  • Three years ago, Investor's Business Daily noted that the top 10% of taxpayers — those earning above $75k — paid 62% of the taxes, while earning 42% of the nation's income.
  • According to the Tax Foundation, Tax Freedom Day was April 27 in 2002.
