European mobile operators are in trouble
European mobile operators and manufacturers are in deep trouble, because of the regulatory environment in which they are operating.

barred from buying and selling their licences[~]they must simply give them back, with no refund, if they choose to abandon 3G. Operators also have to adopt 3G in a new frequency band, rather than phase it in alongside existing 2G, as operators are doing with CDMA2000 elsewhere.It may turn out that GSM-only in Europe was a major mistake, and the bidding frenzy around 3G licenses was a killer-tax for European telcos.
