All warfare is based on deception

All warfare is based on deception. Therefore, when capable, feign incapacity; when active, inactivity. When near [the enemy], make it appear that you are far away; when far away, that you are to lure him; feign disorder and strike him. When he concentrates, prepare against him; where he is strong, avoid him. Anger his general and confuse him. Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance. Keep him under strain and wear him down. When he is united, divide him. Attack where he is unprepared; sally out when he does not expect you. These are the strategist's keys to victory. It is not possible to discuss them beforehand. — Sun Tzu, The Art Of War [this item]

A summit that cheers Mugabe isn't about helping the poor

Colin Powell was heckled and jeered twice during his 10-minute speech Wednesday to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. ... [The summit] ignored the biggest cause of endemic poverty and suffering in the developing world: corrupt, tyrannical and quasisocialist governments. ... In contrast to Mr. Powell's reception, Mr. Mugabe's anti-Western diatribe drew three rounds of riotous applause. [OpinionJournal - John Fund's Political Diary[this item]

The war on Iraq is already begun

About 100 American and British aircraft took part in an attack on Iraq's major western air defence installation yesterday in the biggest single operation over the country for four years. ... The raid seemed designed to destroy air defences to allow easy access for special forces helicopters to fly into Iraq via Jordan or Saudi Arabia.

If the US are going to attack Iraq while the rest of the world prefers to sit on their hands, they will probably keep the media circus in the dark — while claiming that they're still thinking about it or even pretending that there are major internal disputes. Basic military strategy is to keep your plans secret from the enemy; basic tactics to make use of surprise and deception (something few journalists seem to realize nowadays). After the Iraqi dictator has been eliminated, the next target is likely to be Syria or Iran. I expect President Bush to make an announcement about this on September 11. [this item]
