Tired of X-10 ads?
Disable java scripting....In Internet Explorer, choose Tools, Internet Options, click on Security.  Choose the Internet icon form the Select a Web Content Zone to Specify its Security Settings List box, click custom level button.  Scroll through the Setting list box until you find the JAVA section.  Select the Disable Java option button in the JAVA permissions subsection.

Next, scroll through the Settings list box until you reach the Scripting Section.   Select the Disable option button in the Scripting of Java Applets subsection then click OK to close the Security Settings dialog box.

Next in the Internet Options dialog box, click on the advanced tab.  In the settings list box, scroll down until you reach the Java VM section.  Clear the Java Console Enable [requires restart], Java Logging Enabled and JIT Compiler for Virtual Machine Enabled [requires restart] check boxes, click apply, Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box and then restart your system.

Netscape users should choose Edit-Preferences from the menu bar and, in the Category list box, click advanced.  Clear the Enable Java and the Enable JavaScript check boxes and then click ok.

Disadvantage:  Java functionality in some sites, including Hotmail will not work anymore.

Tip for today - Don't use your server as a workstation!  It's there to be a server, nothing else!  Don't try to get it to be or do anything else but that!

The only thing I have loaded up on my server is the OS, anti-virus, and tape backup software.  I used to have the Shavlik hfnetchk tool on there, but now that I have Windows XP on my desktop, I install the hfnetchk tool on my desktop instead.

Shavlik does offer a personal security checker tool that tests the level of "paranoia" you have in your system.  If you only have NT's or 2000's you can download a free version.  It tests whether you have good passwords, whether you are up to date on your Office patches and other issues not related to the Operating system.
