I usually take the backroads out of the area I live in when leaving home for work to avoid the building up of the traffic jam which usually happens very early in the morning. The path I take goes thru a residential area whose inhabitants claim that their roads have been experiencing damage from the heavy traffic going thru their neighborhood every day. In an effort to finance the repair of the damaged roads, the residents of the vicinity set up a collection post, charging Rp. 2000 for every car that goes thru the area. They also put up a whiteboard stating the total of funds gathered so far. This morning I observed there were eight people involved in this operation which from what I see could be sufficiently run by only two, one to hand out the tickets and collect the money and another to prepare for change if necessary. Okay, I'll be a bit lenient and let one more person update the whiteboard which brings the total crew up to three people. But even then, what would the other five be doing? Have we truly become a nation of rent seekers? 4:53:16 PM comment []
