Welcome, Danny and Quinn! [
bOing bOing] Cory Doctorow has this great idea of having a mini-guest blog -- or is that a guest mini-blog? -- down the right side of his own Boing Boing blog. Up to bat this time round are the fab duo, Danny O'Brien of NTK.net (but the world would
certainly know him better in his alter ego, the Irish Times' 'Wired on Friday' columnist...) and partner Quinn Norton (of ambiguous.org). Well worth checking out.

Apropos of nothing, but disturbing nonetheless, my little cat
Pippa managed somehow to throw up exactly into the interior of one of my shoes. I am both appalled and impressed.

Maybe 'flea market' is a misnomer: Bedbugs (or
Cimex lectularius) are having a big comeback after almost being wiped out five decades ago,
says New Scientist. Why? People buying and selling second-hand mattresses, cushions, furniture, books -- even phones offer the little nippers a likely home.

Big guns made a killing on New Economy myth:
Just try to say this phrase without laughing: the New Economy. If you didn't laugh, you probably at least had to suppress a smirk. Has any economic concept in recent times been run up the pole and down again faster?
That's my business opinion column in today's Irish Times. If you don't subscribe, you can read the piece here, if you're interested.

An interesting FT piece on the questions being raised about
the clubbiness of Cisco's board of directors -- "These close ties have prompted concern among some corporate governance experts, who suggest the composition of the board is more appropriate for a start-up than one of the world's largest technology groups."

Over in Seville,
Craig Barrett says he's never been more optimistic,
says the FT: "The head of the world´s largest semiconductor house implied the sector should stop feeling sorry for itself. He said his visits to developed and developing countries had convinced him the opportunities were huge."
BTW, the FT switches to a subscription-only model for its online site as of tomorrow, so read for free while you may, today.

NYTimes: "Confronted with the unblinking eyes of surveillance cameras, Michael Naimark believes he can hide in plain sight with the aid of a $1 laser pointer."

The holiday season approaches and PC manufacturers are hoping consumers will go for cheap and cheerful, since they haven't gone for much else... emachines has
a $399 model without monitor, while HP has pulled its entry laptop
down to $899.

Newsweek: Glitterati vs. Geeks. Steven Levy. "Now Lessig has his chance to shift the momentum by overturning the 1998 Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act. The most recent of 11 extensions of copyright terms, it stretches exclusive control of a work from 50 to 70 years after the creator's death." [Tomalak's Realm]
Levy is usually pretty good -- though not immune from puff pieces on Apple or acting as an apologist for venture capitalists (!) for Newsweek in the past. However that may be more Newsweek's than Levy's fault.
