Oh I wish the rest of the world were just this smart.
Short story. On the way home from work the other day, I managed to crack my Starcraft Brood War CD. I mean a physical crack, radiating from the center hole right to the outer edge. Useless. Don't ask me how it happened, needless to say if I knew that, I would have tried to make it not happen.
Now what do I do? I never backed up the CD (I don't typically do this, though I suppose I could, unless the DMCA somehow applies.) I'm pretty much out of luck. Luckily, the game is still available almost everywhere from eBay to CompUSA for about $10.00, in the about to be deleted bin.
But what if it weren't? What if this were my favorite DVD? You know what, I'd be SOL, since the military-entertainment complex doesn't want me to be able to back up the media I "licence" from them. From now on, I'm going to back up all software CDs I buy, for my own personal use. So there.
I know, nothing profound here, but I've just caught a glimpse of what the world will be like when most everything is digital and non-reproducable because of the legal and technical 'Privication Architectures' that surround things. Yuck. Don't believe me? Just hang on, say, 5 years.
