The record companies are releasing copy protected CDs to an unsuspecting and possibly uncaring public. No one is being served by these tactics, not the listening public, not the record labels (who are beginning to smell kind of extinct to me), and certainly not the artists, who have never been served very well by the record industry anyway. I personally will not accept a compromised format that either distorts the music or limits my ability to make copies for personal use or to be played on different media and in a manner of my choosing.
This being said I would urge music lovers to buy at least one of these corrupt CDs and return them as defective. A list of known corrupt CDs can be found at Fat Chuck’s Corrupt Cd list. Hell, buy (and return) one of each if you can afford to. Or buy (and return) a different one every week. Avast mateys, are ye getting my drift? Let’s show these scurvy corporate dogs who the real pirates are in this scenario. And my sincerest apologies to any corporate lackeys out there who are not especially scurvy....
An interesting take on all this can be found in Bruce Sterling's last novel Zeitgeist, where G7 (a thoroughly manufactured multinational girl group) encouraged and enabled bootlegging and remixing of the music, flooding a geographic region with the music and then cutting deals with local manufacturers to make $$$ on G7 clothing, merchandise and concert appearances.

I just called my mom and told her about my weblog... Hi mom!

Now I have to figure out what to do with this weblog. I've been reading other blogs, reading writing about blogs, and looking at the RSS newsfeeds and tools to help me turn all this darn data into useful information. I've had to resolve some technicruel issues too, generally doing everything except figuring out what I'm doing here, what particular shape I want my little corner of the dataverse to look and feel like. This diary style blog doesn't really suit my inclinations or temperament. I don't really want to be posting about my love life (nonexistant) or my bellybutton lint -- although, hold on let me check, yep, I have raised a mighty fine crop of bellybutton lint today.

Now playing: Irmin Schmidt & Kumo "Masters of Confusion"
Irmin was in the seminal german avant-garde rock band Can. Not tremendously well-known or appreciated, Can pointed the way for many experimentally inclined musicians who were to follow. Kumo is a some rising young drum 'n bass guy who had the good sense to hook up with one of his progenitors.

I'm back from seeing The Fellowship of the Ring for a second and final viewing. It's so nice when something you have been waiting for for a long time -- in my case I first heard about the project around 1994 -- turns out (by virtue of much diligence and teamwork by a creative team that respected and honored the source material) to be the cat's pajamas. Good stuff!
