America's costly new global role (Brad Knickerbocker and Faye Bowers)
America's costly new global role (Brad Knickerbocker and Faye Bowers)
President Bush envisions a Middle East of peace and stability, a region that moves increasingly toward a neighborhood of democratic states no longer led by despots or providing a breeding ground for terrorists.
But it's becoming clear that the costs of such an effort - in terms of US treasure and military forces - is likely to be enormous.
And it comes at a time when the United States finds itself entering an era not unlike the cold war - militarily engaged around a world marked by potential danger points ranging from Iraq and nearby Afghanistan to the Korean Peninsula, the Philippines, and Colombia.
Looking at the growing and shifting military requirements the US faces, retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey says, "We've got a perilous 24 months in front of us."
"How our allies and adversaries define themselves in the next 24 months will shape how we view them for two decades to come," says General McCaffrey, a senior battlefield commander in the 1990-91 Gulf War.

ART ALERT: Toonopedia
Welcome to the world's first hypertext encyclopedia of toons - which will soon, I hope, come to be regarded as the Internet's most comprehensive source of information about the U.S. toon scene. ... The basic idea is to cover the entire spectrum of American cartoonery.
I realize I haven't exactly blanketed the field yet, but I think the 500+ toon topics I've written up so far should qualify at least as a light coverlet. And it will get more inclusive as time goes on, as I intend to continue adding new ones and updating the ones I've got, into the indefinite future.
There is a section near the bottom on individual artists and comics companies. Well done!

Mister Rodgers, Rest in Peace
Mister Rodgers, Rest in Peace
Mister Rogers died at age 74 of cancer. I did not watch the show, but many did, and he was a good influence on so many people that I just had to salute him. Click to query google for information and news on Mr. Rogers.

Singingfish Multimendia Search Engine
Singingfish Multimendia Search Engine
"Singingfish, the search engine that holds a Google-like dominance in providing multimedia searching to audio-visual players, is launching a paid inclusion program this week.
You may not have heard of Singingfish, but if you've ever searched for streaming audio or video files using the Real Player or Microsoft's Windows Media Player, you've used their services. The company handles over more than a million multimedia queries per day, in large part thanks to distribution deals with these two streaming media giants.
Unlike many of the popular peer-to-peer file sharing systems like Kazaa, Singingfish searches only for legitimate, legal streaming media files. The company estimates that about 10% of all websites host at least one streaming media file. And Alexa Research estimates that the amount of streaming media on the Internet grows by more than 10 fold every six months." (Search Day newsletter)
SO while it may not be of any use fin finding the jillions of quasi-legal media out on the net, I did find a some Frank Zappa tunes, some Brian Eno, so it's not completely useless. My highest corporate rating: Not Completely Useless.
