Our Objective
Despite a dramatic increase in the prevalence of broadband connections in the US (projected to reach 35 million by 2005, http://www.digeo.com/News/industrynews-facts-broad.htm) this access is still largely concentrated in relatively affluent communities. There are two common obstacles which can prevent the adoption of broadband Internet connections. Currently, broadband connections cost approximately $40-$50/month per household, which is too high for many low-income households. Secondly, these communities typically lack the technical training and computer education necessary to effectively utilize the technology. The deployment of wireless technologies in Community Technology Centers presents a new and exciting solution to these obstacles. Since CTCs have an existing technical infrastructure (including a broadband connection) and extensive technical knowledge, implementing a wireless network in a CTC is relatively inexpensive. Additionally, CTCs are uniquely positioned to meet the need for technical training and education because they can leverage their existing training programs, as well as their prominence in the local community.
CTCNet proposes a technology project that would directly benefit three nonprofit community technology center programs (CTCs) and the residents of the housing developments where those centers are located. The project would utilize 802.11b and complementary wireless networking to extend the broadband capacities of CTCs to enable residents throughout high-density housing developments to obtain relatively inexpensive, high-speed access to the Internet in their apartments and nearby indoor and outdoor common areas throughout the development.
