Okay. All blog posts are moved over to the new site. Haven't found a way to move comments. Hopefully before the end of the year.

I've started moving my fics but it's going to be a slow process. There's now a Fic Update page over on the new site that interested parties can check for status info. It doesn't list every single story that has been moved over right now, just broad categories.

Warning: There's be a bunch of dead links over there until the move is complete.

From this point on...

No more fic updates here. It's too much trouble keeping it synchronized with the moved fics. So, consider the fics on this site frozen in time. All new material (updates and whatever) will be on the new site. I'm trying to get the fics I'm actively working on moved over first and then the rest. But it's a big job so... don't expect miracles.I hope to complete the move some time between Christmas and (US) Thanksgiving

Okay...started moving things...

From now on, my blog posts will be here: Standing On Boxes

It'll take a couple days to get all of the old posts there (It's a time issue.. and a lot of early posts used a different format for titles.) and I'll probably lose any attached comments (not that there were many in the first place. (Only 1000+ blog posts in 7 years?))

Once that's done I'll start moving stories over. Not sure what I'll do for those.

The YAHF fic "Elven Wishes" has been moved so that it is now part of the series "Thru the Gate/Class of 99"

Not a lot of real fic writing this past week.

I've been playing with one of my YAHF ideas - possibly turning it into a real fic where it'll max out at 5K words. If that many.

Okay.... not perfect. Missed a few links here and there. It'll take a couple days to catch them all.
11:36:55 PM    Notes []

I'm uploading the reorganized story pages tonight (Sunday)... gonna take a while because it insists on re-rendering every single page. But I needed to clean things up before moving the stories elsewhere and this is the best 'smoke test' for this stage of the process.

So, if you click somewhere here and get a page-not-found kind of error. Give it an hour or two and try again. I don't expect it to take more than an hour or two but If something is still missing/broken after 6AM on 20-Jul-2009 let me know. It's probably a typo in one of the reorged story files.

Of course, it's doing all of the blog posts FIRST(!!)-- Every one since 2002, 10 posts a minute. Not sure when THIS one will get posted.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

The fics had chapters updated (and posted to TtH) for the International Day of Femslash yesterday. (Not that either has actual femslash-y bits in them yet...)

"Slayer Mercury" - the chapter with Xander has been updated.

"The Devil's Girl" - The bit with Andrea in the hospital and the meeting with Jo is up (should have split it in half. It's really too long.)

Not doing much writing the past week. I'll be lucky to get the next part of "The Devil's Girl" done by the 18th. I'd hoped to get the whole thing done but not enough words want to come out of my head for it.

So, what am I doing?

Getting my fics ready to move to another site.

Last week I spent several days going over every story I have archived here, rearranging them, etc. Right now they are organized by when I posted them - mostly - by year, month, day. (I think my oldest story was posted here back in September/October, 2003). When I'm done it'll be by /story type/story name with a few complicated things in between.

400K+ words? That's a lot of little files. But once I repost them here in that organization it'll be easier to move them elsewhere.

And this weekend... I've been playing with eFiction. Once I strip out the multi-user stuff and rearrange the rest... not sure how much is going to be left. But it's better than starting from scratch and writing my own archive software. Just barely.

Some things in it don't seem to work really well -- like adding stories. Not sure if it is me or the way I have it set up or if it doesn't like my web browser BUT -- I'm finding it easier to manually enter the story chapter info into the database (it uses MySQL) manually using a Mac GUI MySQL management tool.

Hopefully I'll have this all done and ready to move by November. Just to be optimistic.

So... Radio Userland closing down has me thinking seriously about software to archive my stories.

Choices?

Drupal or eFiction

Drupal is more flexible (though whether it'll be fully functional on a Yahoo hosted site is debatable)) BUT I'll have to write my own fan fiction management module. On the other hand, I can use it as a blog also. And it has some CMS features I want to play with.

eFiction is specialized software. Designed FOR archiving fan fiction. But I'd have to make some modifications for it to do some of what I want.

Or maybe a combination?

Either way -- I'm going to change access rules for my stories. What I'm thinking of:

  1. Reviews will require a login (Possibly OpenID if Drupal. Not sure eFiction supports OpenID)
  2. Access to unfinished chapters might also require a login.
  3. Access to any on-line story notes? Definitely require a login.
  4. Anonymous access to finished story/chapters.

Opinions anyone? (And not on using Yahoo as a hosting site. I know there are cheaper, and etc. ones out there.)

The external USB drive I backup things to on my Mac Mini (as opposed to the mini-USB powered drives I use to backup my MacBook with (1 for Mac OS X/1 for Vista)) appeared dead this morning when I was updating a story (Slayer Mercury).

So... after work I went out and got a replacement. But I put it in a Firewire case I bought years ago - replacing a much smaller drive that was in it. Yes, Firewire 400 is actually faster than USB 2.0 (It's a sustained through-put issue, not a max-rate issue (which is where USB 2.0 beats Firewire 400) as I understand it -- but the drive does seem to run a bit warmer.

And while at B--- B-- getting the drive... I had one of those moments when locking my car. Kept pressing the lock button on the key (as I should) but couldn't figure out why the door wasn't UNlocking.

What? Yup! Doing A, Expecting B, but really wanting A. I'm thinking of blaming Monday.

Hmm... a smattering of things.

The GG/BtVS and BtVS/DwP/FoL stories are listed as a series under the WIP page. I've also added a short ficlet that goes with them as a backgrounder "There Is No Spoon" and tweaked the next part of "The Devil's Girl"

Updated parts 1 and 2 of "Slayer Mercury". Hope to have Part 1 posted to TtH before the end of the weekend if all goes well.

It looks like the company that hosts this blog/site is shutting down their hosting service for people using their individual blogging software. (Would have been nice to get e-mail from them about it instead of accidentally finding out 2 weeks after they announced it on their site. And just a month after I renewed for another year.)

See: http://productnews.userland.com/radioUserLandClosing

So... I have until Dec, 2009 to move everything. No big deal. At the worst I just dump it all out as html. Best case - I finish doing the Drupal thing in the next 5 months.

I'll make sure there's at least a downloadable copy of everything (fan fiction wise) available before then-- assuming anyone wants.

The Apprentice is now complete (Or as complete as I'll ever get it - I merged a couple parts instead of giving them their own part.).

Just like "Lady of A", I haven't moved it to the 'Completed Fics' page. There are still side stories I hope to do some day.

Check out the story idea "The Devil's Girl" (Link on the 'Ms. Kite' page.)

Not sure where it came from. Not sure it even works. It's set some point before Buffy runs into/rescues Rory. Or an alternate universe of that. Haven't decided yet. It'll be short. The prologue is mostly done and will be posted by Sunday.

The goal is to post the final chapter onJuly 18th, 2009. Assuming it turns into a readable story.

Okay...

I haven't had a chance to move this site elsewhere. Drupal doesn't quite fit the bill so I'll have to write something myself that does everything I want. Hopefully before Labor Day.

Until then... renewed for 1 more year here.

Updates to:

"Slayer Mercury" - I'm stuck on the scene where Buffy sees Sailor Mercury for the first time in the second part/ficlet. The 3rd part is much further along, though it still needs a scene (Buffy goes to the beach). It's the most I've written with Xander since 'Class of 99' - not sure if so much dialogue works.

And, I posted the first part to ff.net last weekend and got some interesting feedback. Unfortunately, I don't think part 2 is going to go over too well with some of them.

"Scooby Who - the next part is approx. halfway. And I've tweaked previous parts 3 and 4 - though not enough for anyone to notice (Maybe. Might not be an actual improvement.).

And there's a serious lack of inspiration for the titles of the parts to both stories.

I've been paying for a Yahoo Small Business hosting site (NeoCows link to your left) and I REALLY need to move this site to it. Or cancel it.

I've got two months before this site expires. If I don't move by then I'll need to renew it.

I'm probably going to use Drupal. It seems to have a bunch of modules I can combine into what I want.

We'll see.
