So... Radio Userland closing down has me thinking seriously about software to archive my stories.

Choices?

Drupal or eFiction

Drupal is more flexible (though whether it'll be fully functional on a Yahoo hosted site is debatable)) BUT I'll have to write my own fan fiction management module. On the other hand, I can use it as a blog also. And it has some CMS features I want to play with.

eFiction is specialized software. Designed FOR archiving fan fiction. But I'd have to make some modifications for it to do some of what I want.

Or maybe a combination?

Either way -- I'm going to change access rules for my stories. What I'm thinking of:

  1. Reviews will require a login (Possibly OpenID if Drupal. Not sure eFiction supports OpenID)
  2. Access to unfinished chapters might also require a login.
  3. Access to any on-line story notes? Definitely require a login.
  4. Anonymous access to finished story/chapters.

Opinions anyone? (And not on using Yahoo as a hosting site. I know there are cheaper, and etc. ones out there.)

The external USB drive I backup things to on my Mac Mini (as opposed to the mini-USB powered drives I use to backup my MacBook with (1 for Mac OS X/1 for Vista)) appeared dead this morning when I was updating a story (Slayer Mercury).

So... after work I went out and got a replacement. But I put it in a Firewire case I bought years ago - replacing a much smaller drive that was in it. Yes, Firewire 400 is actually faster than USB 2.0 (It's a sustained through-put issue, not a max-rate issue (which is where USB 2.0 beats Firewire 400) as I understand it -- but the drive does seem to run a bit warmer.

And while at B--- B-- getting the drive... I had one of those moments when locking my car. Kept pressing the lock button on the key (as I should) but couldn't figure out why the door wasn't UNlocking.

What? Yup! Doing A, Expecting B, but really wanting A. I'm thinking of blaming Monday.
