It was that obsessive corner of her mind, that spark of genius that had made her good at hacking, that stood her in good stead in her new profession. But it was that desire to understand in exacting detail how something worked and the need to control it to get the desired results that made her an asset to the Council. And she'd taken to the Council training like a duck to water.
Brute force magic, used for wholesale changes to reality, had originally held her attention but the power had proved too dangerous for her sanity and recovery had not been easy. So she'd learned to use only slight, subtle power to manipulate probabilities and influence events.
No more world ending, just small thing. Changing the color of a traffic light to affect the pattern of a subjects' day. Moving a stone on the sidewalk or road to set in motion other event. Things that would go unnoticed by most but which would result in the desired effect.
Before she'd had a chance to make use of the training she was back in Sunnydale, her memories suppressed, waiting for a call from the Council to activate. A call that never came.
---
The First Evil and its minions and hangers-on had managed to eliminate
most of the known members of the Council of Watchers prior to the battle that had resulted in the destruction of Sunnydale. But as Giles found while beginning the long arduous task of resurrecting the Council later that year, the First Evil hadn't bothered to destroy of the centuries of meticulous records and journals of Watchers, Slayers, and other Council activities magically preserved and stored in several protected locations scattered around the British Isles.
Only those records, ancient documents, and other research materials in close proximity to slain Watchers were damaged or lost. Giles could only conclude that an entity that had existed before the advent of writing didn't consider it important when planning an apocalypse. Or, just another of the invariable flaws exhibited by the evil of the week that he had seen during his association with Buffy that gave her an edge in its' defeat.
Gathering together the remaining records belonging to the Watchers' Council scattered across the globe was just another facet of the monumental task facing him in rebuilding the Council from the ground up. The knowledge of the past activities of Watchers and Slayers, not just the Council itself, would be an important part of rebuilding the organization to meet the changes to the Slayer lineage resulting from the battle with the First Evil.
Encouraged by Buffy, Willow, and Xander, Giles had stepped reluctantly into the power vacuum following the destruction of the Council headquarters. As they trickled in from their hiding places, the remaining watchers had needed direction and he had given it to them, sending them back out in small groups to collect Watcher records and artifacts belonging to the Council before they became lost or destroyed.
Occasionally, a large van of documents and other artifacts would arrive at the new Watchers headquarters in a formerly disused Council property outside of London. Although he kept an eye out for certain highly confidential documents, Giles couldn't spare much time in the beginning to delve into the books, and scrolls and files that his hands ached to touch. He was rarely able to do more than take a brief glance at the newest collection before the Council's new archivist took possession of it.
Giles looked down at the small pile of documents sitting on his desk. The most recent find, he wasn't looking forward to going through them. If he could, he would hide them away and forget about them. This was a facet of the old Council he dreaded involving his slayer and her friends in but he couldn't see much choice. Only they really understood the danger these documents posed for them.
He'd become aware of the Council's more ruthless methods and its' Special Projects group when they had come for Faith several years ago. Until then its activities had been just rumors to most in the Council. They were the people the Council had sent out to deal with special situations when it was clear that the Slayer or other normal Council methods would not be adequate. He supposed it was guilt for his own past actions but he believed this facet of the old Council did not have a place in the new one and would need to be dealt with.
With the exception of several unknown operatives and sleepers left out in the cold by the destruction of the Council the Special Projects group had not survived the First Evil's Council purges but a large number of their records had. Sitting on his desk was just a small sample. The only way to permanently shut down this group was to go through their records and find out who the remain members were and send someone after them.
The slamming of his office door caught his attention. Looking up, he watched as his surrogate children entered the room. Buffy and Willow grabbed the two chairs in front of his desk, pulling them back to the leather couch Xander and Dawn had collapsed onto.
"Hey Giles! What's the what?" Buffy asked, tilting her chair back against the bookshelf behind her. Wincing, he cleared his throat and pointed at her chair.
"Sorry." She winked.
