-- Part 1 -- Main -- Part 3 --

Running late for the weekly Board meeting, Dawn hurried across the Council complex. Stepping into the meeting room, she slammed the door shut, startling the occupants.

"Sorry I'm late." She said quickly. "Giles? Have you seen Buffy today?" She asked anxiously, slightly out of breath, as she dropped into her seat at the large table in the middle of the room. "She didn't come home last night after the party."

"No, she was still there when I left." He looked around the room. "Are you sure?"

"Buffy? She's small but she's noisy. It's impossible to miss her getting dressed." Dawn said. "Besides, I don't think her bed was slept in."

"Yes. Right." Giles said, frowning. He turned to the others. "Has anyone else seen her this morning?"

"Nope." Xander said, shrugging before reaching over to grab a donut from a tray in the middle of the table. "Thought she was sleeping in like last time."

"She does tend to miss our weekly meetings." Willow added, giving Faith a look that said, all too clearly, that Buffy wasn't the only one who was often awol.

"Where is she then?" Dawn asked. "We were supposed to go Christmas shopping this morning after the meeting."

"New 'boy-toy'?" Faith asked, smirking at some private joke.

"She hasn't said anything." Dawn said. "And you know she isn't good at hiding that sort of thing."

They all nodded in agreement.

"Maybe she went home with someone from the party?" Willow muttered. "She does like the older types and there were a few running around last night, like that Bond guy."

"Eww..." Dawn said, shuddering with a dramatic flair, ignoring the wink Faith sent her way. "He's so not her type."

"Mr. Bond will be joining us shortly if you feel the need to interrogate him." Giles said, looking at Willow. "But Dawn is correct. It is very unlikely that she would have gone home with him without saying something to one of us. The meeting should go very once he arrives." Turning to Dawn, he said "I'm confident that between us we can quickly find her."

Dawn slumped into her seat, staring down at the table. "If she isn't dead." she mumbled to herself. Feeling a hand squeezing her shoulder, she looked over at Faith, the only person who'd heard her. "Thanks." she whispered.

Faith nodded and leaned back in her chair.

"Have you seen Buffy?" Dawn asked, her voice rising hopefully as Bond strode into the room ten minutes later, a grim look on his face. The faint darkness Willow had sensed around his aura earlier in the week now seemed to be barely restrained. A menacing wave of feeling flowed off of him, palpable to her sensitive nerves. Shivering at the sensation, she struggled to keep her face blank as she watched him.

Looking around the room as if sizing everyone up, he dropped a small green object on the dark table, the sound of it hitting the flat surface echoing in the large space. "This was delivered to my home early this morning." He told them, adding bluntly. "She appears to have been kidnapped."

Reaching over and gingerly picking it up, Willow examined the object. It appeared to be a small plastic box. Pressing on the sides, she watched with no surprise when it opened, revealing a small silver disk. Nodding to herself, she extracted the small disk. Walking around the table, she inserted it into a small video player at the front of the room. Before pressing the 'play' button on the player she scanned the faces of the other people in the room for any indication that she should stop.

James Bond's face remained impassive, though his eyes seemed to sparkle with some emotion she couldn't place. Giles nodded grimly, gesturing for her to continue. Dawn's pale face stared at her hopefully, as if wishing for a miracle. Faith's expression was unreadable. From her body language, as she leaned over, her arms wrapped around Dawn in an obvious attempt to provide some comfort, Willow could see she was barely in control. Xander stared back at her impassively.

Taking a deep breath, Willow pushed the button and stepped back.

A low voice, dripping with menace, came out of the television in the center of the front wall. The screen was completely black.

"Good day, Mr. Bond." Willow gave him a quick glance but couldn't detect any reaction on his face. His aura seemed like a tightly coiled spring. The voice continued after a long moment - "Curses can be tricky things. They can strike at the most unexpected moment. You didn't think you would escape your doom that easily, did you?"

Willow looked over at Giles, ready to interrupt at his signal but he shook his head at her unvoiced question.

The screen slowly lightened, revealing what appeared to be a small room with stone walls. A small woman with long blonde hair hung silently, apparently unconscious, from thick silver chains embedded in the ceiling. Willow's eyes were drawn to the unusual costume she was wearing. It seemed to be some sort of outfit with a Scottish look to it. After a minute of silence, the voice continued.

"I've taken certain steps to ensure that you don't." the voice said. "Merry Christmas, and better luck next time Mr. Bond."

The view on the screen seemed to pull back, out through a door. As they watched, a wall appeared in front of the door, built by invisible hands brick by brick. The video ended, the last thing visible a smoothly plastered wall.

"Okay... what was that all about?" Willow demanded in the shocked silence. "And was that really Buffy?"

"Yes. That was her." Bond told them. "She was still alive when that was filmed."

"How could you tell?" Dawn asked, the hopeful sound making Willows stomach ache in sympathy.

"You could see her breathing." Faith answered. "Is that all you have, spy boy?" She rudely asked him. "Cause if you don't have anything else we should get with the rescuing. Now."

He gave her a quelling look. Willow winced at Faith's expression, glad she wasn't in the slayer's line of fire. Removing another similar flat object from a pocket, Bond held it out to Willow, telling them, "This is from last night."

She frowned at him as she took out another disk. After placing the other disk back in its case, she once more pressed play. The screen was filled with a scene filmed at night. From a distance it appeared that two people where standing in front of the Council's London office talking. Willow couldn't pick out individual words but from the tone it was apparent that the conversation wasn't going well.

They watched for several minutes, straining to understand what was going on. Glancing around the room, Willow could see that the others had come to the same conclusion. They were obviously watching Buffy have an argument with the normally taciturn Bond.

When the two split up the camera briefly followed Bond as he crossed the street and got into his car, before returning to focusing on Buffy. The screen seemed to jump and Buffy was suddenly somewhere else, standing at the entrance to a small park, one that Willow recognized as being several miles from the office. She also noticed that the small clock in the corner of the video had jumped ahead thirty minutes.

She gasped in shock, echoed by Dawn, when, with no warning, Buffy suddenly collapse in a heap. The camera remained focused on her as a dark van pulled up and several dark figures climbed out. She watched, horrified, as they picked Buffy up and roughly threw her into the back of the van, wasting no time before driving off. The camera seemed to shake for a moment and the video ended abruptly.

"You just let them grab her?" Faith shouted at him, disentangling herself from Dawn.

"No." Bond told her firmly, ignoring her obvious anger. "The agent watching her called for backup as soon as it happened. It arrived too late, for both of them."

"What do you mean!" Giles asked. Watching him, his anger just barely contained, Willow wondered who at this moment was the more dangerous. The angry slayer, the spy, or old Ripper.

"They knew she was being watched." Bond shook his head, his voice low and soothing. "They killed him as soon as he'd finished filming what you just saw."

"Why?" Willow asked, puzzled. Someone had gone to a lot more trouble than they were used to seeing.

"They wanted us to see that." Dawn spoke up softly. "To know they could have killed her at any time."

"Yes." Bond said.

The anger seemed to drain out of the room at that point.

Willow frowned. Watching the video of Buffy being kidnapped had been confusing and hadn't provided any clues she could use to explain the earlier video. She also wondered why their new allies were following Buffy around with a camera, but that would have to wait. First they had to find her and get her back.

"So, does that mean you know where she is?" She waved at the final image on the screen.

"No." Bond told her abruptly. Watching him closely, Willow wondered why his aura suddenly seemed so much darker. "They were able to easily lose our people."

"So..." Faith growled across the table at Willow. "You just need to whip up some mojo and we'll find her."

"Faith, it isn't that simple." Willow protested, wondering where Faith's antagonism was coming from. As soon as the video had finished she'd expected some emotional reaction from Dawn, not Faith. Contrary to her expectations, although she was clearly worried, Dawn was just sitting there taking it all in like a big sponge.

"You never have any problem finding Dawn when someone kidnaps her!" Faith snapped at her. "Why is it different for Buffy."

Willow raised an eyebrow before drawling - "I didn't think you cared." She noticed Dawn stiffening out of the corner of one eye, and decided that she needed to find out was really going on between the two. She didn't think Buffy would be too happy with everyone if Dawn and Faith became a lot closer while she was gone.

"This isn't the time for that..." Giles told them firmly. "You can argue about who cares about Buffy more when we get her back. Why don't you explain what you mean. There are a number of spells that can be used to find a slayer, no matter how well hidden."

Blushing, Willow noticed Faith doing the same thing. Dawn and Faith's reactions were making her suspicious. She could tell the two of them were up to something.

"Go ahead." Giles told her.

"Well... Buffy seems to have developed a natural shield against tracking spells." Willow admitted. "Ever since the fall after she defeated Glory she's been almost invisible to most types of magic." She avoided mentioning the resurrection spell, not sure if their MI6 guest was supposed to be know about such things, but could see understanding develop among the others.

"And you're just telling us this now?" Giles sputtered, taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes wearily.

"She's usually with Dawn or someone else I can find easily." she sheepishly told him. "It hasn't been an issue until now."

"I assume you have some other way to find her." Bond asked her. Willow shivered at his icy gaze.

"There is a another spell..." Willow admitted reluctantly.

"But?" Faith asked.

"It needs several family members to work. But I don't think it'll work in this case"

"Why?" Dawn asked curiously. Willow wondered why she was still taking Buffy's kidnapping so calmly.

"It's a relative finding spell. You need blood from a male and a female family member. It'll tell you where every other member of that family is. We only have Dawn here. By the time we found a male relative Buffy could be dead." She refrained from bringing up the perpetually absent Hank Summers.

"I was wondering..." Dawn asked, her question aimed at Bond. "That wasn't what Buffy was wearing last night after the party. Or when she was kidnapped."

Willow wondered why Faith was suddenly smirking. "I hadn't noticed that." she said. "No offense to anyone here who's Scottish but I don't think Buffy would ever wear something like that willingly."

"It looked like something the daughter of a Scottish clan chieftain would wear." Giles answered. "Though I don't recognize the pattern. It must be one of the more obscure clans."

"Yes." Bond answered.

"Oh..." Giles looked at him. Willow had the feeling that she was one of the few people who had no idea what was going on.

"Okay guys." Willow told them. "What is going on!"

Buffy slowly awoke, groaning slightly at the dull ache in her shoulders. From the pressure on them she could tell that she was hanging from something attached to her arms.

Notes:
  • Another one of those... not sure if it works. Especially trying to write about what they see from the videos.
  • Not really happy with this part... especially Willow and her 'issues' with Bond. I don't think that works.
