FFA #147 Dawn/Elektra (Daredevil)

The Assassin

Dawn shivered in the cold air, a gust of wind blowing small pellets of ice and snow under the hood of her parka. The glare of sun on snow was only barely dimmed by the heavy sunglasses she'd been wearing since stepping out of her hotel earlier that morning.

She'd known it wasn't a really good idea to voluntarily take Giles' Myths and Legends Seminar but Dawn had needed the course to fill out her schedule for the year. But only now was she learning how monumentally stupid she'd been to think he would take it easy on her because he knew her. In fact, it was exactly the opposite.

The research topic he'd assigned her at the end of the seminar had seemed simple at first, an examination of resurrection myths. What she hadn't expected was his insistance that she find actual modern examples to compare the myths to. And that her paper be good enough to submit for publication.

With a little help from the Watcher's library, she'd come up with four recent resurrections that he'd accepted. Her sister's resurrection using the Urn of Osiris; the resurrection of the vampire Darla by Wolfram and Hart; Spike's return after the Sunnydale collapse; and the reported resurrection of the assassin Elektra. The last one was going to be the hardest to research.

Unlike the other three, Dawn didn't know any of the parties involved and the documentation she'd found in the Council's copy of the records from Wolfram and Hart's LA office that Angel had sent them in thanks for the dragon rescue were very vague. And her sister had originally refused to allow Willow to track down Daredevil in New York for her, for what she considered very flimsy sounding reasons that she suspected had something to do with the summer Buffy had spent hunting vampires in New York when she'd returned from Rome, instead of immediately joining the rest of the Scoobies in Cleveland as originally planned.

Buffy had gone so far as getting the New York watcher to photograph the grave of Elektra Natchios, supposedly the assassin's real name, to keep Dawn from going to New York. Dawn was sure Willow would eventually pry loose the real reason her sister seemed to have a Daredevil phobia, and pass it along. But until an explanation was forthcoming - it was certainly strange behavior, even for her flaky sister.

If it hadn't been for a hint passed along by Oz during his last visit to Cleveland, Dawn would have had to find another resurrection example to write about. He'd mentioned running into a small band of warrior monks while learning to control the werewolf part of himself. One of them had been a woman who matched the few descriptions and photographs she'd been able to find of Elektra.

It had taken a few weeks but she'd finally worn down both her sister and Xander, convincing them that a trip to Tibet over spring break would be much safer than the demon hunt road trip some of the Cleveland slayers had planned for their break that they'd wanted her to go on.

Notes:
  • This is based on Frank Miller's Elektra, not all the ones churned out since, and certainly not the movie (Which I haven't seen).
  • I threw this into the Round-Robin pile at the TtH forums... but no one has gone for it.
