Sunday, July 21, 2002 Hello World!

I was playing the piano for a couple of minutes before heading back to the computer. Shortly thereafter, this conversation ensues:

Dante: "Da-ee?"

Me: "Yes?" Turn to look at Dante who has retrieved his electronic piano and is standing next to the piano bench where he has placed it.

After verifying my attentiveness, he turns on a background rhythm and starts pounding the keys enthusiastically, bobbing his head to the beat. Then he stops, throws his hands into the air and says, "'kyou, 'kyou!"

In searching the web to find a poem I wanted to re-read, I found that my favorite current poet has a great website now.

http://www.danagioia.net/

The poem I was trying to find is called Summer Storm:

His brilliant, scathing criticism of the modern, out-of-touch poetry establishment, originally published in Atlantic Monthly, is also here:

His short explanation of how he was exposed to his General Foods co-workers as a renowned poet is here:

Also, it looks like his site has an index of poets, with Dana's commentary on each. I can't wait to read it!

Dante's being behind developmentally, I've decided to educate him more aggressively. Today, I tried to teach him his numbers up to three. I would hold up a finger or two and say, "How many is this?" in the sing-song voice one uses to coddle toddlers. This evening in the car on the way to the grocery, Dante beckons for my attention from behind me in his car seat, "Da-ee!" I turn to look. He's holding up two fingers. "How ma-ee 'is?"

"Two," I say.

"Right," he says with a smile.
