Whether you call it an addiction or a sensitivity that leads to craving and excess, refined sugar has that effect on me, and others in my family. We're happiest and most balanced and "drop the dross" (lose weight) when we're not consuming candies and desserts.
Sugar foods for me are self-medication, so to speak, for mild blues and down energy. I put it in the same category as caffeine (socially acceptable self-medications) and close cousin to nicotine and alcohol (somewhat less socially acceptable yet still popular).
What makes it SO difficult is that eating non-sugar foods (especially when travelling) is so difficult. There just isn't much in the way of healthful variety in mini-marts...
