For so many years those buildings were filled with people spending public money on projects that couldn't go anywhere. Now at least there's space available, and presumably people, if and when the lights come on again. [Scripting News]
The "Internet Boom" caused discontinuity in the marketplace. Businessmen (like myself) saw the hype and hoopla and failed to see the business model in so many of these efforts. In particular, high touch service and information were being offered for "free" (actually, investors were paying the development and subscription fees). In that environment, bootstrapping became difficult if you were competing in a space where your competitors' business models were flawed--even to the point of tens of millions of dollars in losses per year... or month.
Competition against those without a business model but with bucks (more money than brains) requires survival long enough for the do-do birds to die off. Now that many of them have, there is breathing room... and also untapped talent waiting for a project that makes sense.
