Hey! Don't be so down--pessimism can harm health [Reuters Health eLine]

Megnut wrote the blogging piece we've been waiting for. "As with free speech itself, what we say isn't as important as the system that enables us to say it." Yes. [Scripting News]

Why Parents Have Grey Hair

The boss of a big company needed to call one of his employees about an urgent problem with one of the main computers. He dialed the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whispered, "Hello?"

"Is your Daddy home?" he asked.

"Yes," whispered the small voice.

"May I talk with him?"

To the surprise of the boss, the small voice whispered, "No."

Wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is your Mommy there?"

"Yes," came the answer.

"May I talk with her?"

Again, the small voice whispered, "No."

Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked the child, "Is anybody else there?"

"Yes" whispered the child, "a policeman."

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked "May I speak with the policeman?"

"No, he's busy,"! whispered the child.

"Busy doing what?" asked the boss.

"Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the firemen," came the whispered answer.

Growing concerned and even worried as he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the ear piece on the phone, the boss asked, "What is that noise?"

"A hello-copper" answered the whispering voice.

"What is going on there?" asked the boss, now alarmed.

In an awed whispering voice, the child answered, "The search team just landed the hello-copper."

Alarmed, concerned, and more than just a little frustrated, the boss asked, "What are they searching for?"

Still whispering, the young voice replied, along with a muffled giggle, "Me."

My friend's preparations for a visit from her children included a trip to the bank. Waiting in line at the teller's window, she lamented to the middle-aged man behind her, "My children are in their 20s, and I'm still giving them money. When does it end?"

"I'm not sure I'm the one to ask," the man said while glancing uncomfortably at a paper in his hand, "I'm here to deposit a check from my mother."

The annual per capita income (PCI) for the United States is $31,000. I think that's the second-highest in the world, next to that of Switzerland. After the United States and Switzerland, income drops considerably. The PCI for Germany is only $24,000. Behind the Germans are the French at $23,000 and the English at $22,000. Spain is at $18,000. Poland and Mexico are at $8,000.

Is it just me, or do other people think that XML feeds like RSS can help make information more accessible to people with disabilities? What about outliners? [Scripting News]

Absolutely! For example, when we were publishing TAPCIS for CompuServe access, we developed a core group of people who helped us build out our tool for use with various technologies for screen readers and magnifiers. I'd recommend:

  • A template (minimalist) restructured to make it highly compatible with screen readers.
  • Have someone step up to be a core weblogger on this subject.
  • Let the community build around that.

I like a minimalist approach to information, with the ability to dig deeper as needed. Radio has answered that need, although I look forward to future generations of the news agggator that add intelligence to detect "updates" of information and only show me the most recent one, and that allow better sorting/categorizing/holding (for future action).
