Survey: Teen drug, alcohol use lowest in decade [CNN]
The numbers are still extremely high, at over 1/3rd. "In the 2000-01 survey, the percentage of 12th-graders who used an illicit drug in the previous 12 months had remained constant for the fifth straight year at about 41 percent. This year's survey, however, shows a decline to 37 percent. "
And the impact of education: "Among students whose teachers warned them away from drugs "a lot," 15 percent used illicit substances. In contrast, 32 percent of students whose teachers "never" talked to them about the subject used drugs, the survey found."

Meet the Nigerian E-Mail Grifters. Those increasingly ubiquitous Nigerian e-mails 'respectfully requesting your assistance' and promising great rewards actually do work -- for the Nigerians. An admitted scammer explains how it works. By Michelle Delio. [Wired News]
Comments: We received one of the first faxes from this scam back in the late 80's and turned it over to the police. Essentially, they all ask you to money launder, to help them pull funds (millions) out of the country for a cut. On the face of it, the scheme is criminal and immoral, yet in the past month the volume of email has been ratcheted up and I've heard the same story with at least 50 different variations in my spam folder. If there is a positive side, with all the different variations hitting, perhaps fewer people with a criminal streak waiting to be activated will fall for this (sometimes deadly) fraud and instead stick with your basic pyramid schemes, inkjet cartridge refills, and maybe a little cocktail of breast and penis enlargement, human growth hormone, and weight loss magic.

During the last session of our teaching workshop, participants were asked to state their personal goals for the immediate future. One teacher vowed to update photo albums, another to lose weight. The goal that got the most response, however, was given by a slightly out-of-shape kindergarten teacher. "I resolve to exercise until I can complete a 20-minute workout in less than an hour," she said. [Thanks to Reader's Digest.]
