40 Ways to Peace, Not 40 Years of War - August 4, 2002

“Hope is a state of mind, not of the world...Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for...success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good.”
Vaclav Havel, Czech dramatist, poet and politician

“The ‘kingdom of heaven’ is a condition of the heart--not something that comes ‘upon the earth’ or ‘after death.’”
Friedrich Nietzche, German philosopher and poet

"Our lives are the only things that are completely ours. The kind of life we make is our most important work, the single most significant project we will undertake. I suppose that what I am trying to say is that in my own life, as I have struggled with the question of what makes a good and happy human life, I have become ever more convinced that struggling to secure the conditions for a decent human life for others is a large part of the answer."
Peter Cicchino, Professor of Law, American University (1960-2000)

40 Ways to Peace, Not 40 Years of War - August 3, 2002

“The past is prophetic in that it asserts loudly that wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows. One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means. How much longer must we play at deadly war games before we heed the plaintive pleas of the unnumbered dead and maimed of past wars?”
-Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“My reasoned conviction is that the shattered order cannot be fully restored except by a response that combines justice with forgiveness...Forgiveness is the opposite of resentment and revenge, not of justice... Forgiveness is in no way opposed to justice, as if to forgive meant to overlook the need to right the wrong done...The guilty must be correctly identified, since criminal culpability is always personal and cannot be extended to the nation, ethnic group or religion to which the terrorists may belong...Forgiveness, in fact, always involves an apparent short-term loss for a real long-term gain. Violence is the exact opposite, opting as it does for an apparent short-term gain, it involves a real and permanent loss.”
-Pope John Paul II, “No Peace Without Justice, No Justice Without Forgiveness,” December 11, 2001

"Justice will not come... until those who are not injured are just as indignant as those who are"
-Thucydides, Greek historian

40 Ways to Peace, Not 40 Years of War - Prelude

September 11, 2001 was both an end and a beginning: an end to the lives of countless loved ones; the beginning of cries for war in response to the terrorist attacks; and an end to many of our most cherished beliefs about freedom and democracy.

Peaceful Tomorrows believes that the days leading up to Sept. 11, 2002 can be another kind of beginning: the beginning of outreach to communities outside of our own; the beginning of meaningful dialogues on alternatives to war; the beginning of connections with other groups sharing our goals of peace and justice. We believe that these things cannot be accomplished in one day, but require a genuine commitment that will continue over time.

We are designating the 40 days leading up to Sept. 11, 2002 as an invitation to seek 40 ways to peace, rather than 40 years of war. Every day, Peaceful Tomorrows will post different readings, quotes, news items and speaking events that we hope will inspire you, on a local level, to reach out to others and make the connections so necessary to our survival. And we hope these things will serve as a beginning of a lifetime of commitment towards peace and justice.
