An 84th Problem

ONCE A FARMER WENT TO TELL THE BUDDHA about his problems. He described his difficulties farming -- how either droughts or monsoons complicated his work. He told the Buddha about his wife -- how even though he loved her, there were certain things about her he wanted to change. Likewise with his children -- yes, he loved them, but they weren't turning out quite the way he wanted. When he was finished, he asked how the Buddha could help him with his troubles.

The Buddha said, "I'm sorry, but I can't help you."

"What do you mean?" railed the farmer. "You're supposed to be a great teacher!"

The Buddha replied, "Sir, it's like this. All human beings have eighty-three problems. It's a fact of life. Sure, a few problems may go away now and then, but soon enough others will arise. So we'll always have eighty-three problems."

The farmer responded indignantly, "Then what's the good of all your teaching?"

The Buddha replied, "My teaching can't help with the eighty-three problems, but perhaps it can help with the eighty-fourth problem."

"What's that?" asked the farmer.

"The eighty-fourth problem is that we don't want to have any problems."

Meditation is Easy. Good article by Louise Hay. When I started meditation 11 years ago, I was told simply to sit in a straight back chair, get comfortable, breath and relax, and as thoughts come up, go back to the breath. Yes, my meditations have changed over the years, and some people are moving meditators with Tai Chi and yoga or even doing massage.

Yet I will say that is someone has hit a barrier in their life, is dissatisfied, or in pain, sitting meditation for 20 minutes a day will yield guidance and information in time. And for the financially oriented, the ROI (Return On Investment) for meditation is truly significant. The effects will carry forward into every aspect of Life.

In a recent newspaper column I read a series of angry letters from supermarket clerks complaining about how rudely they are treated by customers talking on their cell phones in the checkout line. One clerk counted that out of over 200 people she served on her shift, 47 were talking on their cell phones. Most of them, she reported, were discourteous, acting as if she was interrupting them from something more important, while she was simply trying to help them. These clerks’ frustration was due not only to their customers’ rudeness, but their energetic absence.

As spiritual beings, we are fed by our connection with each other. When we seek to connect with another person and they are not there, we are left feeling hungry. These clerks, already frustrated by the banality of their work, were reaching out for human contact, and when their customers treated them like an intrusion, they grew hurt and angry. They were working there not just for money, but for love. [from InnerSelf]
