STAY HEALTHY BY KNOWING EXACTLY WHAT’S IN THE FOOD YOU EAT

Want an easy way to know how many calories you eat everyday? Do you need to cut back on sodium, increase your iron intake, know cholesterol content of foods, or what foods will give you the most calcium? If so, the United States Department of Agriculture has the website for you.

There are 6,220 different foods to choose from and you’ll find all the nutrients in each food— even ones that are not listed on food package labels.

For example, you can find out the total fat content of just about any food you can think of. There’s a category for searching either alphabetically or they list each food from the ones with the most fat to the least fat.

You can discover that California avocados have almost twice as much fat as Florida avocados. Or in one glance compare the fat content in dozens of breakfast cereals. Would you believe one pie shell has 62.28 grams of fat? And that a fast food cheeseburger has 32.94 grams of fat and is a whopping 563 calories?

That’s enough to make you want to find out that a radish has one calorie and a leaf of raw spinach has two. Whatever it is you want to know, you’ll find those foods and thousands of others you may be wondering about at this USDA website. There’s also an area for frequently asked questions, links to other nutrition information on the web, and even a category for Latin foods. Just click http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/SR15/sr15.html.
