We're losing one of our last advantages as China prepares for manned space flights. Space is something we really need to look in to. Not the NASA vision of research labs and low-G golf but the commercial value. The asteroid belt contains billions of tons worth of precious metals and who knows what other useful substances. The moon has helium, Mars has iron ore. Space is full of raw materials in addition to it's uses as a new place to live. If the US doesn't hurry up China will beat us to it. The Apollo missions were all well and good but since then we've left the moon pretty untouched. We had a 30 year jump on the competition and we blew it. Now it's time to play catch up. Commercialize the industry and let the power of capitalism take over and work it's magic. If NASA demonstrated the know-how there would be mines on the moon by the end of the decade.
