You've probably seen this around already but in case you haven't.  Lawrence Lessig is taking time off from his speaking tour to do other work.  He will no longer be giving his famed freedom speech.  However it has been made into an mp3 and Flash presentation.  You can find this and more hereThis info courtesy of Doc Searls.  Thanks Doc!

A sort of review of Small Pieces Loosely Joined.  The article is courtesy of Salon

I just finished reading the book myself today and have to agree with what the reviewer describes.  It's outlook is a little rosy for me and some of the philosophy is a bit flawed but the main point is right.  The web is here because people put it here.  AOL TimeWarner didn't build it neither did Microsoft.  I built it, well part of it, this page at least.  No one on the planet besides me may read this but it's hear for you to look at.  If someone links to it, amazing!  If I link to others, it's no longer a dead end, and I try to avoid that whenever possible.  I suggest this book to anyone wondering what all the fuss was about, and to those who know what it's all about.  The Web is here to stay because I still have something to say.

Ok I'm trying to think of a thoughtful and calm response to that last article.  It's hard to do.  That article enrages me to the point of violence.  Why is it that the government of the U.S. will savagely attack Microsoft for what they consider to be a monopoly in the OS market but yet brazenly back the RIAA in their attempts to enforce their monopoly with force?  I'm appaled that a Senator from my state is backing this adamently.  When it's time for his re-election campaign I know which way I'll be voting.  I think what this requires is a lot of thinking and deciding by everyone.  It's time to once and for all weigh the values at stake here.  We need to take a play out of their book.  We need to get organized.  We represent the 300+ million consumers in the United States who buy the records these companies put out.  What we need to realize is that WE are in control of this situation.  They can't do this to us without our permission.  They're using OUR government by paying them with OUR money that we gave to them in exchange for the music.  We brought this on ourselves.  It's time to withdraw that sanction.  I urge everyone who reads this to immediately stop buying music from the major labels.  I am not urging you to download it for free but to simply stop buying it.  I understand what a great thing music can be and how hard it is to live without but this needs to stop.  The only way to get their attention is show them that we realize the muscle we have.  They can't sue us, or bribe our officials or buy 5 million dollar houses without OUR money.  Stop giving it to them.

They've made half-assed attempts to put out a product in the on-line realm that's acceptable.  PressPlay is on the right track but it's not enough.  Email them, write them a letter, call their support.  Let them know that in order for it to be acceptable we must be able to do as we choose with our music.  I will gladly pay $250 a year for the major's catalogs as long as I control it.  I need to be able to burn it to a CD or transfer it to my MP3 player whenever and as often as I'd like.  So far they've offered us less than we already have with their antiquated system of CD's from stores.  It's time to let them know exactly what we demand for our money.  I don't know about you but I remember every hour I work to earn my living.  Those were hours of MY life.  The money I earned is MINE.  The products I purchase with that money should also be MINE.

They're not playing games anymore.  Neither should we.

If you have any suggestions for a suitable replacement to the current system or just want to share an idea feel free to leave a comment or email me.

Um ok...this from CNETIf a person links to a peer-to-peer network and shares copyrighted content against the law in "expectation” that others will do the same, that triggers felony penalties automatically.  So um yea.....this is perfectly legal according to our government...and they make it a fedral crime.  Anyone else up for buying some land somewhere outside the US?  A really funny thing is that guess what...felons can't vote....so that would make an entire generation of people who can't vote and the government can run rampant.  Not sure what to say about all this yet..give me time.
