The New Intellectual : Many words have been granted me, and some are wise, and some are false, but only three are holy: "I will it!"

Aristotle. "Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting a particular way...you become just by performing just actions, temperate by performing temperate actions, brave by performing brave actions." [Adam Curry: Adam Curry's Weblog]

Another great quote.  Smart people become smart by learning.  Strong people become strong by using their bodies.  People who say they can't do something, or that they would but it's just not how they are or it's not in their capabilities/skillset/training are wrong.  They can't do it because they will not do it.  I didn't know how to drive a forklift until last month, now I'm a forklift driver and a good one.  Why?  Because I got on the truck and drove it till I knew what I was doing.  I wasn't born with the knowledge I have, I learned every bit of it.  I worked hard to know what I know and be what I am.  I am who I am because I chose, I did, I THOUGHT.

Dan Barker. "Faith is a cop-out. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits." [Quotes of the Day]

[Robert Scoble: Scobleizer Weblog]

I just really liked this quote and it sums up my ideas on faith.  I don't have faith that my forklift is going to work.  I am reasonably sure that it will due to the fact that it's worked until now, it's been maintained well and there are no problems with it. That's not faith, that's knowledge of the facts.

UK urged to join broadband fast lane. Hgh-speed net access is all the rage but true broadband is much¸ much faster argues the Chief Exectuive of a Swedish broadband firm. [BBC News | TECHNOLOGY]  This is the best quote I've read in a while "Instead, he argues the government should see a high-speed broadband infrastructure as a basic societal right in the same way that other utilities are viewed. "  I don't agree with it in the least but it's still thinking ahead.  Slowly but surely net access is becoming what it eventually will become, a utility.

Already people are asking as they tour prospective new homes "Is this house in an area with DSL or Cable access?  Is this house wired for a home network?"  I may be a geek I know but I could not live with the ease I do without my computer and it's just gotten better since I've gotten broadband.  Aside from the P2P networks I use every aspect of my surfing and working online has become more enjoyable.  The only thing I need now is for hard drive capacity to take the next leap into the TaraByte range.  I have 100 Gigs worth of HD space between my PC and my MP3 player, I have about 20 gigs left unused and that's because I've trimmed back.  There are No games installed on my machine, if there were I would be out of space.  I have an XBox for games with it's own hard drive.  But back to the point.  As more and more of our lives are do-able online connectivity is going to be like water and electricity.  People are starting to realize that dial-up just doesn't cut it anymore.  There are a lot of possibilities out there that dial-up users just can't take advantage of anymore.  The next big step in the net will require broadband, and not cable or DSL broadband.  Fiber, lots of it.  The 100MBit limit mentioned in the above article is not the limit by far.  Each strand of fiber is able to carry and average of 30 GBit's of data, the last time I checked you could fit about 1,000 strands in a decent size underground cable.  With some investing people could easily have GigaByte connections to their homes.  Now before you ask what you would do with all that bandwith, what did people do with their TV's before there were 1,000 channels to choose from...they demanded content and services and the same will happen here.  I'm waiting with baited breath.  Rest assured that the next time I move I will not move anywhere that I can't get at least conventional broadband.  Next up for me....a wireless network.
